Self-portrait | Zahir Batin

2015

H(and) - O - H(and)

Using hands as forms of self expression; utilising simple gestures to portray emotions. This series is inspired by Shirin Neshat's Rebellious Silence (1994) and Datin Marina Ibrahim's speech on "Arab Colonisation".

Zahir Batin explores the coexistence of religion and culture, and how Arab culture is synonymous with Islam amongst Malay Muslims and emulate practices of Arab culture even though there may not be any basis in Islam. This results in the assimilation of Islam into Malay culture, rooting out practices which are deem unIslamic because it is not found in "Islamic" i.e. Arab culture.
