Hyperballad
2016
This performance is a live tarot card reading in response to Bjork’s Hyperballad. The song will be played first. After the song is played, the participant (representing Bjork) is invited for a tarot card reading, with each card corresponds to certain verses in the song. This work explores the idea of choices one has to make and how the cards provide different paths to choose from but yet limits the participant to only said choices; no chance in formulating alternatives outside the given paths.
So what do we have here?
Your insatiable desire for freedom, represented by the Goddess of mercy Guanyin. The full moon looms over; the time is ripe for you to break apart from it. Its pull is strong but you have to resist.
There is something holding you back. A burden from your past that sticks on you with suction cups.
In the immediate future, you'll be dead inside, yet you still look pristine and your words are like flowers; there are cracks that you must plaster, but is that what you should really do?
You are trapped in a cycle. Of always having to constantly putting on a mask. Its mentally and emotionally draining.
Only you can help yourself to break free from this oppressing rigidity.
I'm sorry, but the greatest obstacle of them all could be the one you truly love. The red thread connects you both.
The sun could either be rising or setting, depends on your next course of action. It could either be fortuitous or a huge blow to you.
You feel trapped in a glass prison, and you are afraid of getting hurt when you try to break free from it. You'll never know unless you try.
Deep in the abyss, a pearl awaits. You will suffer a lot, but will be immensely rewarded. To quote Khalil Gibran, "A pearl is a temple built by pain around a grain of sand."
